On Tuesday, 13 November 2018, State Historian Devin Lander met with town historians and historical society representatives in a special visit to Wayne County.

He toured the county historian’s office and archives and learned details of numerous projects related to local history.

Wayne is one of only a few state counties to have historians who meet on a regular basis.

The local historians also shared information about a current project to inventory Wayne County Historic Sites. It was started using an Excel spreadsheet and a Word document for each historic site. Currently there are over 850 sites listed.

Recently Jim Paprocki from Sodus volunteered to help create an online inventory that could be easily updated and added to by numerous volunteers.

The sites can be sorted by category. Examples might be “historic markers” or “cobblestone structures” or “Erie Canal related sites.”

Lander expressed his interest in learning more as this prototype is further developed.

He also shared information about his efforts to promote history’s relevancy.

Following a question and answer session with the 25 or so people present (municipal historians, historical society representatives, County Clerk Mike Jankowski and Assemblyman-Elect Brian Manktelow), Lander toured the Wayne County Archives area.
