Lake Bluff, Sodus Bay, Huron, Wayne County, New York. The scenic view from atop Lake Bluff spans the horizon of Lake Ontario reaching as far as the eye can see. In the early days of Lake Bluff's settlement, one would find groves of American chestnut and elm tress. The tall, dominant, sturdy oak trees remain as a reminder of the strength and longevity of this tightly knit community. Bald eagles flew over the lake from their nesting areas between Sodus Bay and Chimney Bluffs. Hundreds of varieties of song birds and waterfowl provided the bird watcher limitless hours of observation. For a while, some of these birds disappeared from the area, but have now returned, including the majestic bald eagle. The natural beauty of Lake Bluff has attracted visitors from all walks of life. Artists, poets, writers, religious leaders, musicians, business persons, and people just looking for a quiet place away from the hectic life of the city all found inspiration and rejuvenation here. Lake Bluff has been so loved by families over the years that many of the original settlement families still retain summer cottages that have been in their families for nearly 100 years. Lake Bluff was first attended as a summer campground and retreat by a local group of Methodists around 1872 led by Reverned Fay Hovey Purdy. In 1882, Lake Bluff was owned by Wells and Fuller. The land was surveyed to lay out roads and lot sites. Many of the first Lake Bluffers were from Newark. |
