Historic narrative: | |||||
The Mt. Pleasant School (aka Sodus Centre School) goes back at least to 1877 (see 1st photo). Its principle in that year was Edward C. Delano. Edward Delano was the founder of Arbor Day in New York State. Later in life, as the chief examiner in the State Department of Public Instruction, he perfected uniform examinations for teachers certificates throughout New York State. He was president of the Wayne County Teachers Association and later president of New York State Association of School Commissioners. The school served several generations of school children until it closed in 1950. The last teacher at the Sodus Center School was Miss Julia Youngs, remembered fondly by her many students, both old and young. The school, attended by youngsters of the Sodus Centre area closed in 1950 when all the education in area in the Town of Sodus was centralized in the Sodus Central Schools on Mill Street in Sodus. The school has been rebuilt into a private home (see photo above). Dave Sharp purchased the schoolhouse Bell and mounted it on his North Rose home.
