Historic narrative: | |||||
Clark House Address: 4698 Port Gibson Road, East Palmyra Original Owner: Maltby Clark Mr. Clark built his home in three sections, beginning with the two-story main part. The 1-story section was added later as evidenced by the thickness of the walls where these two sections meet. It's the third, wooden section that was once used as a schoolroom. But still, it was built at an early date using hewn beams and wooden pegs. This house looks different from other area cobblestones. It was built with large field cobbles and rough-cut limestone quoins and lintels set on edge. The foundation is made of large field-stones. The lintels on the 1-story later addition are brick. The windows have an unusual placement, perhaps because of the staged building. A small cobblestone house in the backyard can be seen from S. Creek Street. It contains a window, so it probably wasn't a smokehouse. Notice the herringbone pattern at the peak. |
