Address: 790 Gansz Road, Lyons Original Owner: a Gansz brother Year Built: Probably ~late 1860s Period: Late Built on a large stone foundation, this house also used large field cobbles and limestone lintels and quoins, and water table again on the front only. It's a 2-story building with a single story wing, and bay windows on the front (an obvious upgrade). This may be the only cobblestone building in the area with a mansard roof. The Gansz brothers built three mansions on Gansz Road. |

From the 1954 Hoffman paper: COBBLESTONE STRUCTURES OF WAYNE COUNTY, by Verlyn Edward Klahn THE MACLEOD VICTORIAN House on GANSZ ROAD. This Victorian house owned by the MacLeods on Gansz Load is the only truly Victorian cobblestone house found in Wayne County. The woodwork is done in beautiful walnut. There are lovely sliding doors and a semi-circular stairway which is said to have cost $1,500 alone. The attic is larger than many modern homes. STONES: The field stones are red, gray, and yellow that are 3-4 x 2-21/2 inches. Each run is 3 to 3 1/2 inches high. JOINTS: The horizontal joint is a prominent V. MORTAR: The mortar is hard and gray with a fine texture. QUOINS: The quoins are regular, tooled limestone. LINTELS: The lintels are wooden. SIDES: On the sides and back there are three runs per Quoin instead of four. |
