Historic narrative: | |||||
Checking this North Main St. house the abstract only goes back to 1899. With the help of old maps and atlases we found it was built in the 1860s by Theodore Hunt. No information could be found in any of the histories about Mr. Hunt. The first mention in the abstract was on 19 October 1901 when Theodore Hunt deeded the property to his daughter, Mrs. Della Hunt Loomis for the "consideration of love and affection and the sum of $1.00." Mrs. Loomis continued as owners of the entire property until 10 July 1941 when she sold an area to Jackson And Perkins. Then on 6 August 1948 she sold the house and land to Neil A. Benzie and Mary D. His wife and 'tenants by entirety the survivor to take the whole." Mr. and Mrs. Benzie were then residents of Palmyra. At the time he bought it there were three apartments. However, they had been allowed to run down and Mr. and Mrs. Benzie not only put a lot of effort on their own part, but spent a great deal of money putting the building in shape. They sanded floors, painted and redecorated. Mr. and Mrs. Benzie lived downstairs where, at that time, there were two bedrooms, with each of the upstairs apartments with one bedroom or a second room that could be used for that purpose. A portion of the land was sold on 4 January 1950 by the Benzies to C.W. Stuart & Co., whose property was adjacent to the Benzies. Mr. Benzie died 9 December 1954 leaving his property, whose ownership he had shared with his wife, to her. Mrs. Mary Benzie died 19 November 1973. Her will refers to the house as an apartment house for the first time. However, her daughter started as before that it had already been converted by Mrs. Loomis before it was purchased by Mr. Benzie. The property was left to Mrs. Benzie's three daughters, Mrs. Shirley V. Pierce, Mrs. Thelma M. Finch and Mrs. Mary F. Mozzetelli, with Mrs. Finch serving as executor. On 31 July 1974 Thelma M. Finch, as executor, sold the property to Franklin T. Russell, Jr. He remained owner for less than a year and on 1 May 1975 sold to Frederick I. Robinson of Newark. |
