Site of the very first blue and gold NYS Historic marker ever received by the Town of Rose. On December 14, 2020 the very first blue and gold NYS Historic marker ever received by the Town of Rose was installed. Fittingly, this very first blue and gold marker commemorated the first town hall built in the Town of Rose the, Soldiers Memorial Town Hall. Special thanks to the William G. Pomeroy Foundation®, a grant-making foundation based in Syracuse, N.Y., which fully funded the “First Town Hall” New York State Historic Marker. |

Historic narrative: | |||||
This was the first town hall built in the Town of Rose. Prior to the existence of this structure annual town meetings were held in various residents and halls throughout the town. An appropriation, not to exceed $2,000, for the purpose of building a Soldiers Memorial Town Hall, in the Village of Rose, NY. finally passed on March 3, 1885, but not by much. The appropriation was carried by a vote of 220 for this building and 192 against building. At an annual town meeting on March 1, 1887 the John E. Sherman Post 401 GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) was granted free use of this town hall, for entertainments, when not previously engaged and the entire control of the room above the entrance. The Rose GAR Post 401 eventually disbanded in 1917. This building is still owned by the Town of Rose. In 1962 became the location of the Rose Free Library. |
