Sodus Limekiln
Limekiln in Sodus - Operated by Elisha B. Mather, this large double-furnace kiln produced calcium oxide, sold under the name "Sodus Quicklime" It was used for many purposes including glass making, and especially for making mortar and plaster. Limestone was conveyed to the top of the kiln, dropped into it where a hot fire was burning below. The heat caused the limestone to break down into a fine crystalline form. The powder was then placed in barrels and shipped by rail. This operation was located in an area of Sodus known as "Calciana", a sort-of latinized name for calcium, and occupied the site that would become the large stone quarry owned by General Crushed Stone and in later years, Hanson.
