This house was the first frame house built in Newark (then called Miller's Basin), in 1820, by Newark founder Joseph A. Miller (1769 - 1831), who purchased 102 acres of land.  It was originally built on S. Main St. (then called Vienna St., the road to Phelps), and was facing east.  In 1839, the house was moved around the corner to newly built West Miller St. so building lots could be sold for downtown expansion. It was on the north side, facing south (where the historic marker is now).  It was torn down in 1952.
