In the quiet countryside, bordered by a wheat field on one side and a road on the other, the East Palmyra Cemetery is located only a couple of blocks off Whitbeck Road. The first person buried there was Mary Durfee Sherman, the daughter of early pioneer Gideon Durfee. She died in 1794 only a short time after she, her husband Humphrey, and their children arrived to live near the Durfees in Palmyra. Historical accounts indicate that one day Mary walked up the hill about two blocks from her home, stood under maple tree, and requested that she be buried on that spot when she died. Since that time in 1794 many early Wayne County pioneers and later residents have been buried there. Indeed, the cemetery continues to operate today.
