Newton Warehouse (currently owned by John S. Blazey, Inc.) Address: Canal Street, Palmyra Original Owner: Butler Newton Year Built: 1845 This warehouse was built to store apples and potatoes awaiting shipment via the original Erie Canal which ran behind this building. The Erie Canal was enlarged and rerouted several times over the years as freight demands increased. Today the Erie Canal is slightly north of its original route near this warehouse. Lake-washed, red sandstone cobbles were used on the west, north, east and portions of the south walls. Large field-stones and even some brick was used for the south wall, facing Canal Street. Brick was also used to construct part of the east wall. Today the warehouse is used by John S. Blazey, Inc., a tractor and pump dealer, as it has since the 1930s. It's a good example of deterioration in a cobblestone building, with a major crack in the east wall. |
