Although most of the churches seated men and women separately, the custom was gradually phased out and the dividing wall was removed. Here the wall remains, but the custom is gone. During 1833 a great revival resulted in many conversions. A meeting on April 7th, 1834 was the start of organizing and building. In 1835 a cobblestone church was completed and East Palmyra and Port Gibson shared pastors until 1853. In 1871 the current building was erected. The two front doors would have been used by men on one side and women on the other. Inside there is a small balcony and two main aisles. The center section of seats is divided down the middle by a board. This allowed husbands and wives to sit on separate sides, but together. | |||||
