lWilliam Fee is buried here. (Note from co-coordinator Martha: William Fee was the first person put to death in Wayne County. He and another man were accused of accosting and brutally murdering a homeless woman who had sought shelter in the south-east corner of Galen, within a mile east of my ancestors' Lamb farm near the little bridge. Fee and his companion fled to New York City but were caught and returned to Wayne County. Although there were no witnesses to the actual deed, Fee had been observed by several witnesses harassing and following her down the road; screams were heard, and her body found shortly thereafter. Insisting upon his innocence to the end, Fee was publicly hung in Lyons after a widely publicized and standing room only trial. His companion was acquitted and immediately left the area.
