Civil War - 111th NY Infantry

Wayne County in the Civil War

Mustered into service in Auburn, NY on August 20, 1862, the 111th NY Infantry Regiment was comprised of residents from Wayne and Cayuga counties. The men received orders to defend Harpers Ferry, for which their defense of that facility fell short, surrendering at Harper's Ferry and confined at Camp Douglas. Eventually released, the 111th was able to redeem itself at the Battle of Gettysburg. The 111th fought every major battle in the east, concluding at Appomattox in April of 1865.
